Whether it’s in a mine, refinery, or boardroom, my focus has always been on helping people and organizations harness innovation to make work safer, smarter, and more productive.
My Journey: A Career Across Continents and Transformations
Anthony Downs’ journey began in Australia, deep within the operational heart of Rio Tinto’s mining and energy businesses. Over more than a decade with the company, he rose from IT leadership roles in the Northern Territory to become CIO for Rio Tinto Energy in Brisbane. There, he led modernization efforts that connected people, systems, and data across vast and remote operations—introducing early industrial digital solutions and proving that innovation could directly improve safety and performance.
From there, Anthony’s path took him across the globe: to Canada and the United States, where he played key roles in Rio Tinto’s global transformation initiatives, including enterprise systems architecture, digital strategy, and the creation of joint innovation centers. He continued his impact at Hatch in Denver as a Principal, helping clients across mining, processing, and energy rethink how technology could drive new value and efficiency.
At Vale, based between Ontario and Texas, Anthony led global innovation programs for the company’s base metals business—designing and executing a digital strategy that brought together operational leaders, startups, and researchers to define the “Future of Mining.” His team became known for solving problems others couldn’t—developing experiments, proof-of-concepts, and full-scale deployments that reshaped the industry’s approach to data, automation, and digital integration.
Today, as Managing Partner at Wamboin Partners, Anthony continues that mission—advising global mining companies on technology strategy and integration. From Austin, Texas, he helps organizations bridge the gap between industrial systems and digital potential, guiding them toward safer, leaner, and more resilient operations.
It’s a career that spans continents and industries, but the throughline is clear: Anthony’s passion lies in unlocking what’s next—where technology, people, and possibility meet.
